Santa Cruz County, CA
September 13, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., September 13, 2006 — Project CURB (Community United to Reduce Binging) and Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz today announced that they will hold a joint press conference and community summit on Wednesday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. to release new data about trends in alcohol consumption among young adults in Santa Cruz County. The news conference and summit, which is open to accredited broadcast and print media, will be held at the The University Inn and Conference Center, 611 Ocean Street, Sierra Room in Santa Cruz, CA.

During the press conference, Santa Cruz County Youth will present survey findings and discuss their personal experiences with alcohol. Representatives from Applied Survey Research, SHOP at UCSC, and Project CURB will also address efforts being made in the community to combat alcohol abuse.

The Project CURB and SHOP survey data was compiled from several sources. In spring 2006, Project CURB collected more than 400 surveys from youth ages 16-20 in Santa Cruz County, assessing alcohol usage trends and consequences. Also in spring 2006, Project CURB, with Applied Survey Research, conducted phone interviews with over 400 Santa Cruz County adults (ages 21 and over). In addition, SHOP at UCSC, as part of the statewide Safer California Schools Study, has collected data about drinking behaviors among UCSC students.

After the press conference, Keynote Speaker Bob Saltz, PhD, Senior Research Scientist, Prevention Research Center will open the community summit, which will focus on issues surrounding underage drinking throughout the County. A panel of experts will discuss adult provision, community awareness, and law enforcement as they relate to local consequences of binge drinking. Breakout sessions will follow the panel, giving community leaders and other community members the opportunity to discuss local solutions to these issues.

Following the press conference, interviews will be available with:
Representatives from Project CURB, SHOP, and Applied Survey Research; Keynote speaker Bob Saltz; and Youth speakers, as well as the following panelists:

• William Manov, Director of Alcohol and Drug Programs SCC
• Assistant Chief Patty Sapone, Santa Cruz Police Department
• Sergeant Shea Johnson, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office
• Stacy Saetta, Pacific Institute of Research and Evaluation
• A representative from Santa Cruz Neighbors Association

The Report’s findings are strictly embargoed until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2006.

About Project CURB
Project CURB (www.projectcurb.com) is a joint initiative of Together for Youth/Unidos Para Nuestros Jovnes, a United Way of Santa Cruz County led initiative, and County of Santa Cruz Drug and Alcohol Programs. As Santa Cruz County ranks 6th in the state for high rates of binge drinking, the goal of Project CURB is to reduce these rates by 50 percent among youth ages 16-20. Project CURB is comprised of a diverse sector of community groups including, health, education, community based organizations, law enforcement, business leaders, treatment and prevention providers, and local legislators. Project CURB utilizes Environmental Prevention Strategies to promote policy and procedural changes that inhibit youth access to alcohol.

About SHOP at UCSC
