Press Conference and Community Summit to
Address Alcohol Consumption by Youth in
Santa Cruz County

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., September 13, 2006 —
Project CURB (Community United to Reduce
Binging) and Student Health Outreach and
Promotion (SHOP) at the University of
California, Santa Cruz today announced
that they will hold a joint press
conference and community summit on
Wednesday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. to
release new data about trends in alcohol
consumption among young adults in Santa
Cruz County. The news conference and
summit, which is open to accredited
broadcast and print media, will be held
at the The University Inn and Conference
Center, 611 Ocean Street, Sierra Room in
Santa Cruz, CA.
During the press conference, Santa Cruz
County Youth will present survey
findings and discuss their personal
experiences with alcohol.
Representatives from Applied Survey
Research, SHOP at UCSC, and Project CURB
will also address efforts being made in
the community to combat alcohol abuse.
The Project CURB and SHOP survey data
was compiled from several sources. In
spring 2006, Project CURB collected more
than 400 surveys from youth ages 16-20
in Santa Cruz County, assessing alcohol
usage trends and consequences. Also in
spring 2006, Project CURB, with Applied
Survey Research, conducted phone
interviews with over 400 Santa Cruz
County adults (ages 21 and over). In
addition, SHOP at UCSC, as part of the
statewide Safer California Schools
Study, has collected data about drinking
behaviors among UCSC students.
After the press conference, Keynote
Speaker Bob Saltz, PhD, Senior Research
Scientist, Prevention Research Center
will open the community summit,
which will focus on issues surrounding
underage drinking throughout the County.
A panel of experts will discuss adult
provision, community awareness, and law
enforcement as they relate to local
consequences of binge drinking. Breakout
sessions will follow the panel, giving
community leaders and other community
members the opportunity to discuss local
solutions to these issues.
Following the press conference,
interviews will be available with:
Representatives from Project CURB, SHOP,
and Applied Survey Research; Keynote
speaker Bob Saltz; and Youth speakers,
as well as the following panelists:
• William Manov, Director of Alcohol
and Drug Programs SCC
• Assistant Chief Patty Sapone,
Santa Cruz Police Department
• Sergeant Shea Johnson, Santa Cruz
County Sheriff’s Office
• Stacy Saetta, Pacific Institute of
Research and Evaluation
• A representative from Santa Cruz
Neighbors Association

About Project CURB
Project CURB (www.projectcurb.com)
is a joint initiative of Together for
Youth/Unidos Para Nuestros Jovnes, a
United Way of Santa Cruz County led
initiative, and County of Santa Cruz
Drug and Alcohol Programs. As Santa Cruz
County ranks 6th in the state for high
rates of binge drinking, the goal of
Project CURB is to reduce these rates by
50 percent among youth ages 16-20.
Project CURB is comprised of a diverse
sector of community groups including,
health, education, community based
organizations, law enforcement, business
leaders, treatment and prevention
providers, and local legislators.
Project CURB utilizes Environmental
Prevention Strategies to promote policy
and procedural changes that inhibit
youth access to alcohol.
About SHOP at UCSC
SHOP at UCSC (shop@ucsc.edu)
created the “Just Say Gnome: Party
Small,” campaign in fall 2005 as part of
an intervention project aimed at
reducing problems related to college
student drinking, primarily at
off-campus parties. This year, SHOP will
launch “Chillin’ With My Gnomies”, the
latest incarnation of the campaign. SHOP
at UCSC is currently working with
student organizations, UCSC
administrators, the Westside
Neighborhood Association, and UCSC and
SCPD Police to implement a series of
“Knock &Talks” and other initiatives to
increase visibility of enforcement
activities and reduce the negative
consequences associated with binge
drinking and out-of-control parties both
on- and off-campus. In addition, SHOP at
UCSC provides prevention, education and
conversation around issues related to
Alcohol and other Drug use, Sexuality
and Sexual Health, and other student
health concerns.
