Consequences for Adults
It’s no secret that many Santa Cruz
parents actually purchase and host
alcohol-fueled parties for their kids
and their friends. Parents and siblings
often hold the misguided view that
hosting a party with alcohol provides a
“safe environment” for teens. This
cannot be farther from the truth. In
fact, if you furnish alcohol for
underage drinkers you can face the
following penalties:
-
Several months in jail time and
thousands of dollars in fines
-
Misdemeanor charges for contributing
to the delinquency of a minor and
furnishing alcohol to minors
-
Being found criminally liable for
any alcohol related death or
injuries
-
Civil charges related to the death
or injury of an underage drinker
Safe Party Tips
There is no such thing as a "safe party"
if alcohol is being served to underage
drinkers. However, the following tips
can help you host an alcohol-free party
for your teens.
-
Don’t allow underage youth to drink
alcohol in your home
-
If teens bring alcohol to a party
you’re hosting, ask them to discard
the alcohol and inform them that
minors cannot drink at the party
-
Monitor the party to make sure teens
haven’t mixed alcohol with their
soft drinks
-
If drinking has occurred at your
party, never let an intoxicated
person drive a vehicle
